Ah, the eighties. Big glasses, bigger hair and bright colours.
The Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) had begun broadcasting in 1980. Little did Australian soccer fans know that it would become the channel of choice for the next two decades and beyond.
In those days, you had to tune your television on either the VHF band (2, 7, 9 and 10) or the less popular UHF band, where SBS (28) lived. Whether you were lucky enough to have an aerial on your roof or had to suffer through moving a set of wired ears, finding SBS was essential for soccer fans.
The late Les Murray presented World Soccer on Sundays, a marathon of local and continental football, which lasted several hours across the day. It became a religious experience. You could watch SBS and not feel like you had to support another sport to fit in. SBS was a multicultural channel for a growing nation, broadcasting the world's game to its broad viewership.
This design pays homage to World Soccer, SBS and Les Murray by incorporating the old look and feel of television in Australia at the time. A timeless fashion statement.
