"The Yugoslavs are great (but very temperamental) sportsmen!"
Soccer Weekly News, 10/9/1949
In 1949, Hajduk Split toured Australia. As customary, the team was billed as Yugoslavia, a distortion that probably caused more resentment among the Croatians in the team than among observers of political accuracy in Australia. The tourists played 20 games with only one defeat - 2-1 against the national team in Newcastle - and a 3-3 draw against Victoria in Melbourne.
The tour included a special trip to Broken Hill, where they were welcomed by the resident Yugoslav community, mainly Dalmatian Croatians whose Napredak soccer team had been formed before the war. Hajduk played a Broken Hill team made up of several nationalities, winning 5-0.
The Yugoslavs gave a preview of a style of play that would soon enlighten the game in Australia, playing with notable skill. The tourists chalked up 110 goals, conceding only 20. This design marks the Yugoslav tour.
